What can be done to increase your immune system's effectiveness?

The human body is composed of trillions if not billions of cells. These cells combine to form organs or tissues that serve specific functions. A cell that dies will be replaced by another. The chemical signals known as hormones are used to communicate between cells. Hormones regulate all bodily processes, from growth and development to metabolism and immunity.

Hormones are chemicals secreted by glands throughout the body. They travel through the blood stream and act like messengers to control how our bodies function. Some hormones are produced internally while others are made outside of the body.

The release of hormones from a hormone producing gland into the bloodstream is the beginning of hormone production. Once hormones are released they move through the bloodstream until they reach their intended organ. Some hormones are only active for a brief time. Other hormones can remain active longer, and they continue to affect the body's functionality even after leaving the bloodstream.

Some hormones are produced in large quantities. Others are produced in smaller amounts.

Some hormones are made at certain times in our lives. Estrogen is one example. It's produced in puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Estrogen is important for women to develop breasts and maintain bone density. It also helps prevent osteoporosis. It promotes hair growth as well as keeping skin soft and smooth.
